Physiological and Ecological Studies on Korean Local Strains of Garlic

Abstract
1. In order to investigate the physiological and ecological studies, this paper was made on the elongation and differentiation of leaves in cloves of garlic under the natural storage conditions with 33 local varieties including Euiseong collected from all the parts of Korea.
2. The beginning time of sprout and foliage leaf elongation in clove during the storage was very different between the early type and late type of garlic. The elongation of sprout leaf in early type began in early August and visible elongation was found in middle August, and in late type the begining of elongation was shown in late August to early September. These were shown around 40 to 60 days after harvest.
3. The sprouted date was around late October in early type (required 3 months after beginning of elongation of sprout leaf) and was around late December in late type (required 4 months after beginning of sprout leaf elongation). The elongation after this was slow, and sprout and foliage leaf in early type was more elongated than in late type.
4. During the storage, the differentiation of leaf was occurred successively and 7 to 9 sheets of the differentiated foliage leaf were found.
5. The local varieties belonged to early type were from Bangeojin, Busan, Gadeogdo, Yeongsanpo, Samcheonpo, Namhae(W), Namhae(R), Gangjin, Goheung, Jindo, Jeju and Seogwipo, and to late type were from Haman, Hanyang, Changnyeong, Geochang, Daegu, Gureongpo, Seocheon, Nonsan, Daejeon, Boryeong, Euiseong, Yeongdeog, Cheongju, Seosan, Danyang, Chungju, Uljin, Ulreungdo, Ganghwa, Heungseong, Gangreung and Chuncheon.
